You could do this by asking how long they have been in their profession and for some information about their qualifications.
Check to see that the lawyer is up to date with all the latest conveyancing legislation and has a good understanding of the various types of conveyancing transactions. You might ask for examples of successful conveyancing transactions that were more challenging than an average sale or purchase.
Ask for references from previous clients to get an idea of the lawyer’s reputation. You could also look at feedback they have received on review sites, or testimonials on their own website.
Make sure that the lawyer is willing to keep you updated on the progress of your transaction and is available to answer any questions you may have. Conveyancing is complicated and sometimes lengthy, and keeping in regular contact is essential to drive the process along.
While not essential, it can be a good idea to engage the services of a lawyer who is located close to where you are buying or selling. This not only makes access their services easier, it can also be indicative of how well they know the local housing marketing, local estates agents and the local authorities who will be providing searches.
